Mythology won’t be softened by Christopher Nolan in The Odyssey: the US rating for the blockbuster has just been revealed.
Will Nolan once again prove his grip on the box office? The director, one of the few today who can sell tickets on the strength of his name alone, tackles the legendary Homeric epic with a colossal budget: $250 million according to the American press (and less, according to producer Emma Thomas, who says it cost less than The Dark Knight Rises, estimated between $230 and $250 million). Furthermore, he will face competition from the Moana remake, which will be in theaters for only seven days. Not to mention Spider-Man: Brand New Day, a strategic weapon in Marvel’s arsenal, which will bow two weeks later.
But he brings his own high-powered arguments, including an all-star cast featuring Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, Logan Marshall-Green, Elliot Page, Mia Goth, and Benny Safdie. And that’s just a sample. The challenge doesn’t scare the filmmaker: in 2023, he came perilously close to a billion dollars in worldwide receipts with Oppenheimer, a three-hour biopic shot partly in black and white. So, he isn’t shying away from making the endeavor even more demanding, notably with an unprecedented level of violence for a project of this scale.

C’est officiel : selon Variety, la Motion Picture Association (MPA) a classé The Odyssey R. Aux États‑Unis, R signifie « Interdit aux moins de 17 ans non accompagnés. » Dans leur écrasante majorité, les studios hollywoodiens taillent leurs superproductions sur mesure pour le classement d’en dessous, le fameux PG-13, qui devient souvent un classement tout public une fois le film passé par la commission du CNC en France. En effet, un R écarte une bonne partie du public potentiel.
Pour l’instant, on ne connait pas les raisons d’une telle décision. Mais la mythologie grecque ne lésine pas sur la violence (les joueurs de God of War en savent quelque chose), on peut imaginer qu’il n’a pas cherché à amoindrir la brutalité des péripéties qui attendent Odysseus et surtout ses compagnons. Il bat ainsi un nouveau record : celui du film classé R le plus cher de l’histoire, devant Joker: Folie à deux et Deadpool & Wolverine (200 millions). Ce dernier est le plus gros carton de la catégorie avec 1,3 milliard de dollars. Un cap atteignable pour The Odyssey?
Christopher Nolan lui-même ne collectionne pas les classements R. Ses trois premiers longs‑métrages (Following, Memento et Insomnia) en ont reçu un, mais toutes ses superproductions y ont échappé jusqu’à Oppenheimer, qui a peut-être fait jurisprudence auprès d’Universal, avec qui il travaille désormais.
The Odyssey will release in France on July 15, 2026. It has yet to receive a rating from the CNC, but an under-12 ban isn’t completely out of the question…
