The Last of Us: Season 3 to Introduce a Major New Character Portrayed by an A-List Actor

HBO’s third season of The Last of Us is continuing to grow, with the arrival of a powerhouse actor in a role tailor-made for the television adaptation.

While the first season chronicling Joel and Ellie’s adventures was a triumph, The Last of Us‘s second season proved fairly disappointing. Currently in full production, the third season must also contend with a major behind-the-scenes upheaval: the surprise departure of Neil Druckmann, co-creator of the game and the series, leaving showrunner Craig Mazin to steer the post-apocalyptic ship on his own.

Yet there’s no time to dwell on the script as the cast keeps expanding quickly, soon after the highly noted arrival of Patrick Wilson in the role of Abby’s father. The lineup has also strengthened with the additions of Michelle Mao (Bridgerton) and Kyriana Kratter (Star Wars: Skeleton Crew) to play Yara and Lev, respectively. And word has recently come that a new Hollywood heavyweight is joining for an original role.

According to information revealed by the American outlet Deadline, it’s the acclaimed Peter Sarsgaard who has just signed on to join the murky world of the Clickers. The actor will don the mantle of a certain Amon, officially described as one of the top leaders of the ultra-violent and religious Seraphites faction.

We’ve seen Peter Sarsgaard in the drama The Trickster, in The Bride!, in the role of Rick Mountcastle in the series Dopesick, or as the corrupt prosecutor Gil Colson in Matt Reeves’ film The Batman. He is slated to appear in Road House 2 and in the Apple TV+ series Neuromancer.

The introduction of the new character Amon clearly signals that this third season intends to give Abby’s narrative arc—and the story of the Seraphites, the rival faction—more depth. By delving into the power politics of the Seraphites (a fanatical sect convinced that the Cordyceps apocalypse is a divine punishment to purify the Earth and build a new world), Craig Mazin will surely be able to deepen the intricacies of Seattle’s civil war, beyond the ellipses imposed by Naughty Dog’s title.

Nevertheless, you’ll need a serious dose of patience before you can judge it firsthand, as this third season isn’t expected to hit HBO’s schedule until sometime in 2027. The long-term future of the franchise remains uncertain, with producers not yet confirming whether this will be the final season or if a Season 4 is already in the works.
