An actress from the Scream franchise recently revealed that her character cannot be killed off in the series, thanks to a contract clause.
Fans of the Scream saga are hard to follow. While the seventh installment reads to us as one of the franchise’s weakest entries, it raked in a impressive $213 million at the global box office on a $45 million budget, becoming the biggest success in the Wes Craven-created series. Following that triumph, a sequel was of course ordered… even though many of us were already thinking it was time for Sidney and her friends to retire their masks and knives.
Yet the paths to success in cinema can be opaque, and we will probably see the franchise’s leading stars return sooner than we might expect. It’s worth noting that some of the main players are still alive after facing a slew of dangers. How to explain such resilience against Ghostface’s blades? Thanks to an immortality clause in the contract of one of the actors, of course. That’s at least what a cast member from the sagaRecently shared.
SEAN BEAN HATES IT
Indeed, Hayden Panettiere, who portrays Kirby Reed, has a contract clause in her deal for the Scream series that expressly prohibits her character from dying. The information first surfaced in 2011 when the actress joined the franchise with Scream 4, as confirmed by director Wes Craven himself. But it’s when she published her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, that Panettiere revisited this unusual detail.
When a THR journalist admitted he hadn’t even known such a clause could exist, the star responded as follows:
You can always ask. It doesn’t mean you’ll get it. And there are loopholes. It took two films to reintegrate me into the Scream franchise. And obviously, I wasn’t in the last one, but I’m still very much present in this universe, so I would be happy to return.
So, will Hayden Panettiere appear in Scream 8? Not necessarily. By reminding everyone that she enjoys such a clause, she risks killing any suspense around her character. In a franchise where death hangs around, an immortal protagonist loses its edge. During her second appearance in the series, in Scream 6, the writers tried to dodge the trap by keeping a false lead: Kirby Reed would be the killer of that installment. But these convoluted plot devices may have worn out the writers — possibly explaining her absence in Scream 7?
If this information circulates widely among fans, the real surprise might be to stage her death. After all, it was with Drew Barrymore’s opening-moment murder—at a time when she was far too recognizable to die—that the Scream franchise kicked off in spectacular fashion. While we wait for Scream 8, still without a release date, fans of the actress can pick up This Is Me: A Reckoning, which has been released in the United States since May 12, 2026.
