Jackass 5: Early Reactions to Best and Last, the Senior Daredevils’ Final Film

Twenty-six years after their show first hit the air, Jackass returns with one final film, Jackass: Best and Last. Early reviews are in.

The 2000s offered MTV its share of curiosities. Between the over-the-top car upgrades in Pimp My Ride and the questionable speed-dating on Next, a crew of thrill-seekers who thrived on pulling off the worst stunts had fans among a certain crowd in Jackass (a name that translates roughly to “morons”). While you might have expected a definitive ending in 2002 when the TV run wrapped, they came back stronger than ever on the big screen.

Between 2002 and 2025, the Morons—as the crew’s nickname translates—have released a string of films. Beyond spin-offs and deleted scenes, the main saga comprises four installments: Jackass: The Movie (2002), Jackass Number Two (2006), Jackass 3D (2010), and Jackass Forever (2022). For this fifth and final film, Jackass: Best and Last, directed by Jeff Tremaine, the fifty-somethings (and nearly sixty-somethings) reunite to close their adventures with new challenges, but also revisit some archival footage. But can they live up to their past craziness? A press roundup.

Jackass: Best and Last Before Retirement

“Even if the film is largely made up of recycled bits, the crew still knows how to infuse it with a warm, inviting atmosphere.”

The Playlist

“Jackass films measure their success by how often they provoke one of three reactions from audiences: laughter, cringing, or nausea. By that deliberately childish criterion, Best and Last fully achieves its goal, delivering riotous slapstick where the troupe gets hit, tasered and tortured.”

Screen Daily

“What gives meaning to all these goofs is the palpable affection they feel for what they do to the people who join them. After watching Jackass: Best and Last, you get the sense they’ll truly miss it, and that’s enough for us to miss it too.”

Variety

“Seeing a Jackass movie on the big screen is still a blast, and Johnny Knoxville still has the ‘it’ factor. I hear that drive to step into the arena with a raging bull, and to go back in if the shot isn’t quite what he hoped.”

The Guardian

Jackass : Best and Last

“Jackass: Best and Last is the franchise’s weakest entry (Bad Grandpa isn’t the worst anymore), and its humor relies solely on classic farcical gags that haven’t aged. It’s a shameless cash grab, but other films in the same vein manage to crack more laughs than this one.”

Looper

“Indeed, Johnny Knoxville, the main fool, remains a likable performer (and a solid actor, as he’s proven many times). And some members of his eclectic crew show a keen awareness of the absurdity of their actions. Yet despite a few funny moments, these films epitomize America’s stupidity.”

Jackass : Best and Last

All the reviews highlight Johnny Knoxville’s performance, still game for the wildest pranks at 55. Yet, between the nostalgia crowd and those who wanted more novelty from this final entry, opinions are divided.

U.S. audiences will be able to judge for themselves starting June 26 in theaters. In France, no release date has been announced yet for Jackass: Best and Last.
