Season 3 of House of the Dragon is right around the corner, and the just-released final trailer for the prequel to Game of Thrones promises real, big‑league spectacle.
Two years after the second season aired, the third and penultimate season of House of the Dragon is finally arriving, and it’s hard to miss. In recent weeks, we’ve not only had a first trailer, but also a whole flurry of character posters and images of the epic dynastic war revealed in an exclusive by Entertainment Weekly.
And now, the series from George R. R. Martin adapted from his own novels gets a new and final trailer, which concentrates essentially on the rising tension ahead of the grand confrontation that everyone has been waiting for for quite some time. Unlike the other (equally excellent) prequel A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms aired on HBO earlier this year, House of the Dragon promises, with these new images, a spectacle of a scale as grand as the wings of Rhaenyra Targaryen’s dragons.
House of the Dragon Keeps Its Cool
This trailer, while less narrative and explicit than the first, still sends several clear messages through its heavy, anxiety‑inducing atmosphere. While it shows fewer frontal images of the great clash between the branches of the House Targaryen fighting over the throne, it relies entirely on the quiet tension that lets you feel the violence of the showdown just as effectively.
Moreover, the trailer is surprisingly bright and hints at daytime battles. If that may seem trivial on paper, for fans of the Game of Thrones universe, it matters: rest assured, this time viewers will get to enjoy the long‑awaited spectacle to the fullest instead of reliving the painful experience of The Long Night, the Season 8, Episode 3 part of the main series that depicted the fight against the White Walkers in near-total darkness.
These images also reassure fans about the spectacular presence of the dragons, who sometimes appear four at a time in a single shot and spew fire with gleeful abandon. On the downside, the overall grayish tone of the photography and some greenscreen backdrops look a touch less convincing, but given the scale of ambition hinted at, one might (maybe) overlook it.
Also worth noting is a brief shot that shows a dragon egg in Rhaenyra’s hands, which could be one of the fossilized eggs Daenerys was shown possessing earlier in the series. A possible foreshadowing of a temporary extinction of dragons to come in House of the Dragon?
The trailer also leans into the cast, spotlighting the returning players like Emma D’Arcy as Rhaenyra Targaryen, Olivia Cooke as Alicent Hightower, Ewan Mitchell as Aemond and Tom Glynn-Carney as Aegon (who look set to clash), Matt Smith as Daemon, and Steve Toussaint as Lord Corlys Velaryon, but introducing new faces too, such as James Norton in the role of Ormund Hightower, Alicent’s cousin. He, in particular, seems ready to lead a sizable army against the dragon faction. To find out whether he’ll come out on top or get roasted, head to HBO Max on June 21, 2026.
