Despite solid audience numbers, the Yellowstone spin-off Dutton Ranch is already navigating a major bout of behind-the-scenes turbulence. The creator and showrunner Chad Feehan has officially exited, but the cast is acting as if nothing happened.
Launched in 2018, the neo-western juggernaut Yellowstone has given birth to a sprawling TV empire, stretching its cowboy saga across multiple eras. Viewers have thus endured the prequels 1883 and 1923 , before the spin-off Marshals: A Yellowstone Story arrived, the series The Madison led by Michelle Pfeiffer in spring 2026, and, most recently, the fresh Dutton Ranch.
A fresh iteration that nonetheless turned into a genuine ratings coup, as Dutton Ranch delivered monster numbers, proving that fans aren’t tired of the Duttons and that the Yellowstone brand still has plenty left in the tank. But the backroom of this ranch is no picnic: after the departure of the visionary Taylor Sheridan with a golden parachute and the high-profile ousting of Kevin Costner that rattled fans, Dutton Ranch is taking heat with the amicable departure of its showrunner, Chad Feehan.
Dutton Ranch Fallout
Recently sat down on the microphone for The Hollywood Reporter to discuss the show’s public reception and the franchise’s future, with actors Kelly Reilly (Beth Dutton) and Cole Hauser (Rip Wheeler) facing some prickly questions. The journalist didn’t shy away from addressing the Chad Feehan case, whose abrupt exit had been confirmed weeks before the premiere.
The interview’s mood suddenly turned frosty. Cole Hauser immediately attempted to soothe tensions, downplaying the long-term impact of this leadership shake-up:
« Showrunners change all the time. Our job is to adapt. We’ve been doing this for a very long time now. Things evolve, people move on, that’s just how it is. »
On her side, Kelly Reilly chose to play it safe as well, recalling the ordeal that accompanied wrapping the first batch of episodes:
« We don’t yet have a Season 2. We wrapped the first season with Chad beautifully, hand in hand. It was a tough shoot, but incredibly rewarding, just like Yellowstone was. If a follow-up is ordered, those decisions won’t be ours. »
Since those remarks, Paramount officially renewed the series for a second season. Behind the scenes, whispers have surfaced about the real reasons behind Chad Feehan’s exit. According to sources close to insider Matthew Belloni (for the site Puck), tensions involved heated exchanges with the show’s stars, with the head of the project Taylor Sheridan and 101 Studios chief David Glasser. Sheridan reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with Feehan’s work on the first season of Dutton Ranch.
If the series is thus guaranteed another round of on-screen fallout, Paramount has yet to announce who will step in as showrunner for the next chapter of Dutton Ranch. In the meantime, the entirety of the first season of Dutton Ranch remains available on Paramount+.
