Vampire Up Close and Personal 2: We’re Wolves Sequel, Starring Taika Waititi

More than a decade after What We Do in the Shadows, Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi have finally begun writing the sequel, We’re Wolves.

In 2014, What We Do in the Shadows followed the daily life of a vampire house share in the style of a faux documentary. Both utterly ridiculous and brimming with clever ideas, it earned a strong cult following. Since then, Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi have expanded their universe with two TV series: the first, Wellington Paranormal, follows two awkward cops investigating paranormal cases, and the second, What We Do in the Shadows, digs into the everyday lives of a new batch of vampires on Staten Island.

Since then, the two directors, producers, screenwriters and actors have kept busy and have spoken repeatedly about the possibility of giving a true follow-up to the original feature. They’ve even already chosen a title: We’re Wolves. If the project seemed to have stalled after more than ten years of waiting, it now appears they’ve finally picked up the pace. C’est du moins ce que vient d’annoncer Jemaine Clement, but fans will have to be a little more patient.

We’re Wolves Without Intimacy

During a Collider interview at the Annecy Film Festival, Jemaine Clement confirmed that he is actively writing the screenplay for We’re Wolves with his partner in crime Taika Waititi. This long-awaited sequel should feature the rival werewolf pack seen in What We Do in the Shadows. Indeed, our favorite bloodsuckers encountered them just after The Ball of Death (or Unholy Masquerade in English). Will this new film be centered at least in part on Gilles (or Stu in the English version), played by Stuart Rutherford, and now a member of the pack?

To find out, fans will have to be very patient, as the two writers seem to be juggling their busy schedules due to their prolific careers both behind and in front of the camera:

“We’re actually writing it, you know. We’ve started writing. For a long time, we just talked about it. Now we’ve started. Very recently. […] At this pace [the screenplay should be completed by] 2027, for sure. It’s an advantage […] that Taika and I are in the same country.”
