Starring Alain Chabat and Jonathan Cohen in an animated film that looks like a video game straight out of a dusty PlayStation 1: that genuinely intriguing premise of Le Vertige, Quentin Dupieux’s latest film. But, as is often the case with the director of Rubber, Le Daim or Yannick, one must wonder whether the funny idea can hold up over the runtime.
Although the feature was created using the 3D software Blender, it invokes machinima, those films made from the graphics engine of a video game. Yet, behind its somewhat clumsy meditation on hyperreality, Le Vertige doesn’t say much more, even though the medium itself seemed ready to explore this existential doubt.
