The new Spider-Noir series featuring Nicolas Cage on Amazon Prime Video has just upended its hero’s origins by veering dramatically away from Marvel’s comics, delivering a genesis that’s far darker and more unsettling.

We’ve been waiting with bated breath for this Spider-Noir, a creation from Amazon Prime Video and Sony. With the formidable Nicolas Cage bringing to life a Ben Reilly who’s at the end of his rope (not to be confused with the monochrome Web-Slinger from Into the Spider-Verse), the verdict is in: it’s absolutely brilliant. Radical, moody, and fully embracing its vibrant homage to the classics of film noir, the series checks every box to become one of the best superhero shows around.

The Origin Story of Spider-Noir
In traditional comics, if the classic Peter Parker is bitten by a radioactive critter, the Spider-Man Noir comic book follows a mystic path worthy of Hammer horror productions. This Peter Parker gains his superhuman strength, reflexes, and his indispensable spider-sense after the bite of an ancient Spider-God, freed from a voodoo idol by smugglers. A esoteric delirium that already granted him the ability to project organic silk webs from his wrists.

That bite contaminates him with mutant DNA, and he finds himself endowed with the full package of classic Spider-Man powers, including webs shooting from his wrists.
