MobLand on Paramount+: New Details on the Series’ Turbulent Shoot

We know more about the apparently chaotic on-set conditions of Paramount+’s MobLand and about the actor Tom Hardy’s departure.

The news broke only a few days ago: Tom Hardy reportedly left MobLand on Paramount+ not of his own accord. This gangster series, also starring Helen Mirren and Pierce Brosnan, kicked off in March 2025 and quickly found success, becoming at launch the platform’s second-biggest hit for an original series after Taylor Sheridan’s Landman. That milestone is even more valuable because it isn’t tied to Sheridan, who will soon be exiting Paramount+.

Naturally, a second season of MobLand was ordered and wrapped up in March. If one can also expect a third season to be announced in its wake (barring a collapse in viewership), it will presumably proceed without Tom Hardy, who allegedly drew the ire of the producers due to his behavior behind the scenes.

From Souza to Troubles

As previously reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Tom Hardy would be at odds with the producers of MobLand, notably executive producer Jez Butterworth and other members of 101 Studios, David Glasser’s outfit behind the Paramount+ series. The outlet has since clarified that the actor unsettled them due to his on-set behavior during filming for season 2.

According to a source for the outlet:

“He refused to come out of his trailer for hours. He kept the whole crew waiting, which reads like a power move. Making Pierce Brosnan, Helen Mirren and the others wait is professional suicide, I’d bet.”

THR also cited a recent article from Puck News, which states that in addition to his delays, Tom Hardy allegedly tried to change some lines and offered his opinions on the scripts by submitting numerous notes to the show’s creator, Ronan Bennett. He reportedly expressed his discontent at seeing Helen Mirren and Pierce Brosnan stealing the spotlight, whereas the show had originally been built around his character.

Jez Butterworth would thus have threatened to withdraw from the project, but Paramount reportedly preferred to part ways with Tom Hardy. Yet, as THR later clarified, this may not be a true firing. Hardy’s contract reportedly includes an option to renew for a third season, so he could theoretically leave the series of his own accord.

These are therefore discussions about the possibility of his departure, since, for the moment, the streaming platform has not officially greenlit a season 3. No decision has been officially made. If it goes ahead, filming would start this year in September, and without Tom Hardy. However, no release date has yet been announced for MobLand season 2.

TOM HARDY

These new details, if true, will not do any favors for his reputation as a difficult and standoffish star. The most famous comparable case remains Mad Max: Fury Road, in which his co-star Charlize Theron spoke openly about tensions during filming, particularly the frequent delays, while director George Miller explained that he had to coax him out of his trailer.

In his autobiography, Making It So: A Memoir, Patrick Stewart likewise spoke about Tom Hardy’s behavior on the set of Star Trek: Nemesis, released in 2002. The actor was then at the very start of his career, described as solitary and unfriendly by Captain Jean-Luc Picard actor: “Tom didn’t socialize with anyone. He never said hello or goodbye, and spent his free time in his trailer with his girlfriend.” He has, however, not commented on hostility and said he was glad Hardy later broke through in Hollywood.

In 2017, the principal subject himself acknowledged to THR that he had been “a bit stupid” and had “annoyed some people,” but defended himself against being dangerous. He spoke of a “myth, quite absurd, that circulates about me and is usually propagated by those who never worked with me.” For now, he has not yet spoken about his possible (and likely) departure from MobLand.
