House of the Dragon Season 3: Tons of New Posters to Gear Up for War (Finally)

As the release of Season 3 of House of the Dragon on HBO Max draws closer, a fresh batch of posters has been unveiled to help fans keep track.

For years now, HBO has been exploring the sprawling, bloody world of George R.R. Martin, the author behind Game of Thrones. It’s generally a good thing when that yields excellent surprises, such as the series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, as surprising as it is refreshing. Other stories are expected to hit the screen, notably in theaters, since a film about Aegon the Conqueror is in the works.

But before turning to new tales, one series is already in the oven: House of the Dragon, centered on the realm’s most formidable family, the beloved Targaryens. As fans eagerly await Season 3, especially after the trailer dropped in April, HBO unveiled a generous spread of posters featuring the main (and not-so-main) characters, all looking battered.

House of the Dragon Is on Fire

The 18 new posters for Season 3 of House of the Dragon show the characters in rough shape, clearly battered by the events of the Dance of the Dragons. It’s clear this series won’t end in a rosy, candy-floss happy ending, not only because that’s not the kind of story told by George R.R. Martin, but also because the fall of the Targaryen family is already a central thread in Game of Thrones, set nearly 170 years later.

This season will be an opportunity to reunite several of the characters featured on the posters and at the heart of the Targaryen intrigues, such as Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney) and his brother-turned-enemy Aemond (Ewan Mitchell), or Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) determined to rule at any cost. It’s also expected that some new faces will step into major roles in continuing the story, such as Ormund Hightower portrayed by James Norton.

The Season 3 of the series should take us even further into the Dance of the Dragons war, already well under way. In addition to the two main camps, the Greens (supporting Alicent Hightower) and the Blacks (supporting Rhaenyra), a third faction could enter the power struggle. Naturally, the rivalry between brothers Aemond and Aegon is far from over, and the forced exile of the former king is likely to inflame tensions all the more.

Season 3 of the series will begin airing on June 22 on HBO Max in the United States, with eight episodes spread through early August. And as a reminder, the show will conclude with Season 4, in 2028, so the end is in sight.
