After a long string of rumors and delays, the Heat 2 cast has finally been revealed, the sequel to Michael Mann’s cult film.
If director Michael Mann scored a mega-hit with Heat in 1995 (1996 on our side of the Atlantic), considered his most iconic film, he has since faced quite a few hurdles, at least in Hollywood’s eyes. Between the colossal flop Blackhat with Chris Hemsworth in 2015 and the tangled fate of Ferrari with Adam Driver in 2024 (released directly on Prime Video in France), the glory days of Revelations, Ali, and Collateral seem long gone. Fortunately, he still had one ace up his sleeve: Heat 2.
Né sous la forme d’un roman, Heat 2, co-écrit avec Reed Coleman, a été publié en 2022 aux Etats-Unis (2023 en France). Plusieurs fois questionné à ce sujet, le réalisateur a annoncé vouloir mettre en image cette suite et prequel dès 2019. C’est tout compte fait en 2025 qu’il a achevé l’écriture du scénario et trouvé un nouveau studio pour le projet, passant ainsi de Warner Bros. à Amazon MGM (via United Artists). Après toutes ces péripéties, il semblerait qu’Heat 2 soit enfin sur la bonne voie puisque le casting est enfin confirmé pour de bon, avec en prime la répartition des rôles.
Heat 2 Machine
To carry this sequel, which also serves as a prequel, set both before and after the events of Heat, several marquee actors were announced in recent months, though it’s not yet clear what roles they would play in the story. That era now seems partly behind us, as The Wrap has shared part of the cast:
- Leonardo DiCaprio will portray Chris Shiherlis (played by Val Kilmer in Heat)
- Christian Bale will play Vincent Hanna (portrayed by Al Pacino in Heat)
- Stephen Graham will play Neil McCauley (Robert De Niro in Heat) (still in negotiations)
- Adam Driver will play the villain Wardell (still in negotiations)
Ce n’est pas entièrement nouveau, puisque c’était justement le sujet depuis des mois : Leonardo DiCaprio hésitait entre les rôles de Chris Shiherlis et Neil McCauley, et le reste du casting devait se construire à partir de son choix. The Wrap précise que ça n’a pas été une mince affaire, et qu’il a fallu au moins six mois pour que tout le monde trouve un terrain d’entente, notamment par rapport aux emplois du temps de DiCaprio et Christian Bale.
D’autres rôles sont encore à pourvoir, et notamment du côté des personnages féminins avec principalement Sharlene (Ashley Judd dans Heat). The Wrap précise que le casting n’est pas encore complet, et que d’autres gros noms pourraient être confirmés. Pour rappel, Austin Butler et Bradley Cooper ont été attachés au projet ces derniers mois. Récemment, l’actrice Inde Navarette, révélée dans Obsession, a expliqué chez Nylon Magazine qu’elle avait rencontré Michael Mann, pour discuter d’un projet qu’elle n’a pas précisé.
Described as a « Spartacus with machine guns » by a source cited by The Wrap, Heat 2 is a heavy lift for Michael Mann. The initial budget was estimated at $200 million, roughly the scale of a Marvel-style blockbuster, which cooled Warner Bros. Amazon MGM Studios picked up the project, and costs have since been trimmed to roughly $170 million, a still sizeable figure. By way of comparison, Ferrari cost around $95 million in 2023, Public Enemies a bit more in 2009, and Miami Vice around $130 million in 2006.
The Heat 2 novel is both a sequel and a prequel to Heat. The story picks up after the end of the first film to follow Chris Shiherlis (Leonardo DiCaprio) on the run, and also chronicles the early days of detective Vincent Hanna (Christian Bale) and the criminals Neil McCauley and Shiherlis. If all goes smoothly, filming will begin in November 2026.
