HBO has released a fresh teaser for the first season of its Harry Potter series, featuring clips from a fan-favorite, iconic moment.
Netflix had a major year-end event lined up for 2026 with Greta Gerwig’s Narnia. After a global theatrical run (and in IMAX) starting late November, the film was slated to hit the platform on December 25, 2026, right on Christmas. In the end, Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew was pushed to 2027, making room for another heavyweight Netflix release: The Adventures of Cliff Booth from David Fincher.
Officially, Narnia was delayed to February 2027 to give it a wider, longer IMAX rollout (especially in the United States). Privately, one could wonder whether Netflix made this strategic move to avoid the looming competition from HBO’s Harry Potter series, given the sky-high buzz surrounding it. The serialized reboot will begin streaming December 25, also a Christmas launch, and a new teaser was unveiled.
A Baguette Without a Baker
In HBO’s usual spring-time lineup, a teaser was posted packed with little previews of upcoming originals. Inside, there were fresh looks at the series Lanterns, Youth (a comedy about a divorced fifty-something woman in search of sex), War (a legal thriller from the creator of Lupin and Hijack), House of the Dragon (season 3 due mid-June), and the fourth season of The Gilded Age. But what HBO highlighted in the teaser is the arrival of Harry Potter.
The handful of seconds following the young wizard track him alongside Ron and Hermione at Hogwarts, then across a snowy Quidditch pitch. Most notably, the footage is accompanied by the voice of Ollivander, the famed wand-maker from Diagon Alley in London. We even see the shopkeeper (played by Anton Lesser) hand a wand to the young wizard. Is it the correct wand (holly wood with a phoenix feather) or one of the many others that don’t match the boy’s wand? A mystery.
Just like the March trailer, the cinematography is notably dark. It’s a curious choice for portraying a world meant to feel magical, especially since we’re seeing it through Harry Potter’s eyes and the awe he experiences as the universe ahead unfolds. That’s the expectation, given how faithfully HBO has said it intends to adapt the novels, which often hinge on Harry’s and his friends’ excited perspectives.
Time will tell what ultimately becomes of this Harry Potter series. For context, the young Dominic McLaughlin stars as Harry Potter, with Arabella Stanton and Alastair Stout portraying Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley, respectively. Season 1 will consist of eight episodes adapting the first book in the series, The Sorcerer’s Stone (known in the UK as The Philosopher’s Stone). It will premiere on December 25 of the coming year.
