Awaiting the release of Enola Holmes 3, the sequel nobody really wants to see, Netflix unveils ugly new posters.
The message has been clear for a few years now: Millie Bobby Brown is one of Netflix’s indispensable stars. Discovered with Stranger Things, she has lined up projects with the platform, such as The Damsel and the Dragon or The Electric State. But it’s truly with the Enola Holmes saga, largely inspired by Nancy Springer’s YA novels, that she scored her second major success on the platform. Note the titles are pretty on the nose, because this isn’t over yet.
In addition to headlining, she also serves as producer on all films in the franchise. So far, we’ve had two films directed by Harry Bradbeer in 2020 and in 2022 (note the titles are quite inspired, because this isn’t over yet). For the next chapters of the young detective, Enola Holmes 3, this time the excellent director Philip Barantini takes the helm, himself coming off a major Netflix success with the series Adolescence. While we await the trailer and after a first batch of unremarkable images, Netflix unveiled some truly ugly posters.
Enola Holmes : Graphic Horror
The synopsis for Enola Holmes 3 remains brief for now, though it reveals that this time Enola Holmes’s adventures will take her far from the United Kingdom, heading to Malta, a first for both the films and the books. The young detective and sister of Sherlock Holmes (played in the saga by Henry Cavill) will be drawn into complex and potentially dangerous cases, while also preparing for her upcoming wedding to Tewkesbury (Louis Partridge).
What more can you say about these early posters besides that they’re dreadful? On the first poster, we glimpse an Enola Holmes in a pristine white wedding dress, perched on the roof of a carriage racing toward what appears to be a church. The second poster doesn’t really raise the bar, since Tewkesbury is shown as the fiancé awaiting his bride in a perfume-ad pose. There’s not a whole lot to extract from these initial visuals, except that the wedding seems to be a central plot point, a misstep for fans of the original novels.
Several actors who appeared in the prior films have already been announced, including Helena Bonham Carter as Eudoria Holmes, Himesh Patel (Yesterday, Tenet) as John Watson, and Sharon Duncan-Brewster (the Dune saga by Denis Villeneuve, Ballerina) as Moriarty. It remains unclear who Enola’s new enemies will be for the moment. Enola Holmes 3 is slated for July 1 on Netflix.
