To spice up your movie-watching experience and host outdoor screenings, these portable projectors should appeal to you.
The trend of nomadic projectors has gained momentum in recent years: today’s cinephiles love the outdoors, and no longer want to be confined to a dark room to enjoy their favorite programs. That’s why the projector market has evolved in this direction, with many models offering different specifications but with a common goal: to provide greater freedom to their users, as we noted in our comparison of portable and fixed projectors.
That said, finding the perfect model isn’t always easy if you don’t know the field well. And that’s fortunate, because we’ve carefully selected 6 portable and autonomous projectors (with internal or external battery) ranked in ascending order of price that should make you happy. This ranking may evolve over time.
- The most affordable projector: XGIMI Vibe One.
- The most compact projector: Nebula Capsule 3 Laser.
- The most original design projector: BenQ GV50.
- The most practical for daily use projector: XGIMI MoGo 4 Laser.
- The most versatile projector: XGIMI Halo+.
- The best performing outdoor projector: Nebula Mars 3.
XGIMI Vibe One: The Most Affordable Projector
To start our selection, we’ve set our sights on a small, cute-looking model that currently costs under €200: the XGIMI Vibe One. This mini projector, unveiled recently, is truly built for travel with robust materials that protect it from most bumps, as well as its handle that can double as an incline stand.
Thanks to its built-in battery, the Vibe One also offers up to 1 hour 10 minutes of runtime in eco mode, which will come in handy for impromptu outdoor movie sessions, provided you bring along an extra external battery. On top of that, the maker teamed up with JBL to design a 6-watt audio system (Dolby Audio compatible) with a respectable output for a device of this size. When it comes to brightness, you’d better not have sky-high expectations, since it offers only 250 ISO lumens (XGIMI hasn’t disclosed ANSI lumens).
XGIMI Vibe One technical specifications:
- Technology: LCD / LED,
- Resolution: 1920 x 1080p (Full HD),
- Runtime: up to 1 hour 10 in video playback (eco mode),
- Brightness: 250 lumens ISO (no ANSI lumens disclosed),
- Operating system: Google TV,
- Contrast: 1 500:1,
- Audio system: 2 x 3 watts,
- Weight: 1.4 kg,
- Launch year: 2025.
Nebula Capsule 3 Laser: The Most Compact Projector
Continuing, there’s no doubt that the Nebula Capsule 3 Laser is a must-have model if you’re after a projector that fits in your hand and can tag along on every trip. Indeed, thanks to its ultra-compact size and a weight of barely 900 grams, it’s very easy to stash in a bag or even a coat pocket.
Despite its small footprint, this outdoor projector delivers solid performance with its laser light source capable of displaying Full HD up to 120 inches (304 cm) diagonal, while delivering brighter colors than competing LED models, as RTINGS notes. That said, you’ll want to use it in a dark room (only 300 ANSI lumens) and with a nearby power outlet (advertised 2 hours 30 of video playback, about 1.5 hours in practice according to some tests) to enjoy it fully.
Nebula Capsule 3 Laser technical specifications:
- Technology: laser DLP,
- Definition: 1920 x 1080p (Full HD),
- Runtime: 2 hours 30 in video playback,
- Brightness: 300 lumens ANSI,
- Operating system: Android TV 11 (+ Netflix native),
- Contrast: 500:1,
- Audio: 8 watts,
- Weight: 0.9 kg,
- Launch year: 2023.
BenQ GV50: The Projector You Can Project from Wall to Ceiling
Every manufacturer seems to have its own interpretation of the portable projector, and BenQ clearly stands out among design leaders in this space. The GV50’s shape is built for multiple use cases, making both transport and setup on any surface easier.
Moreover, it can deliver a very nice Full HD image thanks to its laser light source, its DLP technology, and its excellent factory calibration for a device in this category. BenQ also includes several features to automatically adjust the image, so you can get the most out of it as soon as you turn it on.
However, the 500 ANSI lumens brightness will most likely be inadequate for daytime use. It’s best reserved for night sessions under the stars.
BenQ GV50 technical specifications:
- Technology: DLP / laser,
- Definition: 1920 x 1080 (Full HD),
- Runtime: 2 hours 30 in video playback,
- Brightness: 500 lumens ANSI,
- Operating system: Google TV (+ Netflix certified),
- Contrast: NC,
- Audio: 2 x 4 watts + 10 watts (subwoofer),
- Weight: 2.1 kg,
- Launch year: 2024.
XGIMI MoGo 4 Laser: The Most Practical Everyday Projector
After being won over by the LED version of the XGIMI MoGo 4, we can also recommend its Laser variant, which is certainly one of the best for everyday use. Its triple laser setup lets it deliver a very high-quality image, much more colorful and contrasted than LED models in a compact footprint. At the same time, its PowerBase stand guarantees up to 5 hours of video playback (compared to 2h30 without the stand), while its 360° base makes setup easier with optimal stability.
Unlike some projectors in the same category, the XGIMI MoGo 4 Laser also includes a native Netflix app on Google TV, as well as an ambient lighting feature that turns it into a true decorative piece. The small drawbacks: basic HDR handling (no HDR10+ or Dolby Vision) and a slightly higher input lag for gaming.
XGIMI MoGo 4 Laser technical specifications:
- Technology: DLP triple laser,
- Definition: 1920 x 1080p (Full HD),
- Runtime: 2 hours 30 in video playback (5 hours with the PowerBase stand),
- Brightness: 550 lumens ISO (no ANSI lumen value disclosed by XGIMI),
- Operating system: Google TV (+ Netflix native),
- Contrast: 1000:1,
- Audio: 2 x 6 watts,
- Weight: 1.3 kg,
- Launch year: 2025.
XGIMI Halo+: The Most Versatile Projector
Next up, it’s hard not to mention the Chinese maker XGIMI, which has wowed us with its excellent projectors this year. The Halo+ still seems to be the best representative of the portable models (even though it’s also the oldest in our pick, released in 2021). And for good reason: it features an internal battery that provides about 2 hours of autonomy, with the option of an external battery to extend the fun.
In terms of brightness, the brand also hit hard with its LED light source rated at 900 ANSI lumens, which sits in the upper range for this kind of device. Visual quality is notably impressive with Full HD support, HDR10 and 3D, while the Android TV 10 interface, built-in Chromecast and Google Assistant make navigation much easier.
XGIMI Halo+ technical specifications:
- Technology: DLP 0,33″ / LED,
- Definition: 1920 x 1080 (Full HD),
- Runtime: 2 hours video playback,
- Brightness: 900 ANSI lumens,
- Operating system: Android TV 10 (+ built-in Chromecast),
- Contrast: 1000:1,
- Audio: 2 x 5 watts,
- Weight: 1.6 kg,
- Launch year: 2021.
Nebula Mars 3: The Best Performing Outdoor Projector
And to cap off our top six portable projectors, it would be a shame to overlook one of our current favorites, namely the Nebula Mars 3. It’s true that the price of this model has literally plummeted since its launch, making it more attractive than ever right now.
Of course, its standout isn’t just its price. It also distinguishes itself from rivals with its exceptional power for a projector of this size (as also noted by Projector Central), offering a brightness of 1,000 ANSI lumens for an image up to 5 meters in diagonal. Plus, there’s a 40-watt audio system that does a solid job with dialogues and adds real value to this outdoor-focused projector.
However, you should know that this unit sticks to Full HD while some competitors offer 4K UHD, and it’s bigger and heavier than the other models in our selection. On the flip side, it’s surprisingly rugged for outdoor use (dust and water resistant, IPX3 certified) and comes with a rechargeable battery.
Nebula Mars 3 technical specifications:
- Technology: DLP,
- Definition: 1920 x 1080 (Full HD),
- Runtime: 2 to 5 hours in video playback,
- Brightness: 1000 ANSI lumens,
- Operating system: Android TV 11 (+ Chromecast),
- Contrast: NC,
- Audio: 40 watts,
- Weight: 4.5 kg,
- Launch year: 2023.
