Lanterns: DC Series Trailer Confirms Cultist Villains

The new Lanterns series trailer has dropped a fresh batch of clues about the cosmic forces at play. A theory now suggests the arrival of another Lantern corps that could be particularly formidable.

Aaron Pierre stepping into John Stewart’s boots, Kyle Chandler cast as an aging Hal Jordan, and the excellent Damon Lindelof (Lost, The Leftovers, Watchmen) as co-creator alongside Chris Mundy and Tom King: that’s a prestige team that really makes you want to believe in the Lanterns series. Especially since the initial pitch markets a superhero-noir at the crossroads between a cosmic True Detective and the dark edge of Watchmen. A proposition that seems to be the exact opposite of James Gunn’s very pop Superman.

The latest HBO Lanterns trailer has, by the way, dropped a hefty tranche of clues about what’s coming, including the possibility of seeing the terrifying Sinestro and Parallax appear. But they may not be the only villains involved, as several hints suggest that a different Lantern faction could pose an even more visceral and bloody threat.

The Green Lanterns See Red

The aforementioned theory suggests that the Red Lantern Corps would emerge as one of the antagonists of the Lanterns series, and that this corps would plot a devastating offensive against Earth. The opening seconds of the latest trailer indeed show a multitude of scarlet beams converging into a single destructive ray. Facing this flood of fire, Hal Jordan is seen deploying a massive emerald-energy shield before a bright flash sweeps across the screen.

These glowing red beams would be the signature of the Red Lanterns, an ultra-violent space faction that draws its energy from hatred, bitterness, and pure rage—like a portion of our audience on Facebook. These spacefaring psychopaths also have a rather poetic anthem that sets the tone for their revelry: “Red as rage and blood, drawn from a smoking corpse, fear our infernal hatred, and burn in this fatal blaze!” Real little Care Bears.

This blood-soaked thread becomes even more credible given the casting, which includes Paul Ben-Victor (True Detective) as an alien named Antaan. Portrayed as an extraterrestrial consumed by a hatred of law and obsessed with the idea of vengeance for an oppressed people, this vigilante aims to impose his own brand of justice (radical and definitive). A psychological profile that slots in perfectly with the origins of Atrocitus, the historic founder and raging leader of the Red Lantern Corps.

Atrocitus is a colossal scarlet titan, one of the few survivors of the brutal Massacre of Sector 666, a purge carried out by the Manhunters, the very first robotic militia of the Guardians of the Universe (the same ones who would later create the Green Lanterns). Exiled on the prison planet Ysmault, it’s through esoteric rituals and black magic that he uses the blood of his former demons to forge his own Red Power Battery and create the associated rings.

In terms of powers, the dude takes gore to a whole new level: the power ring replaces his own heart and transmutes his fluids into corrosive and flaming plasma. This highly acidic blood, which he spews onto his targets, can dissolve Green Lantern constructs and instantly consume flesh—designed for xenomorphs, essentially. Totally impervious to pain or telepathic manipulation due to his obsessive fury, he’s a spacefaring psycho you’ll want to avoid negotiating with.

To confirm whether blood will indeed flood HBO Max, you’ll need a bit more patience. The first season of Lanterns, eight episodes long, will officially premiere starting August 16, 2026.
